Smyrna is one of the closest suburbs to Atlanta, located immediately north of I-285, and with an estimated population of more than 45,000. The areaÿs businesses and homes were burned by General Shermanÿs troops in the Civil War. Known by several names, such as Varnerÿs Station or Ruffÿs station, for example, the city was incorporated with the name Smyrna in 1872.
In 1991, Smyrna began a community redevelopment project known as ´The Village Green¡ to create a well-defined downtown. The development included a large community center, a new public library, and a mixed retail/residential district. This, along with other activity, has revitalized the downtown area and has acted as a magnet for other growth, including a multitude of townhouse and condominium projects.
